We are all guilty of the good we did not do. —Voltaire

[/dt_quote][vc_empty_space][ultimate_heading alignment=”left” sub_heading_font_size=”desktop:18px;”]img_2209The Songs For Shelter story really began back in 2005.  When I was six years old, my parents would bring me down to the Toussaint Academy. I was just a kid having fun and happy to be singing in their talent shows, but I had no idea back then what Toussaint was all about. No idea at all. But I learned. And then it was easy to see why it had always been
so important to my family. It was a special place that changed many, many lives.

In late 2014, my Dad and I were discussing how to put my love for
singing and music to work for teens who are homeless and living on the
streets of San Diego. We talked about how each of us has the ability to
help someone – a hug, some food, or a warm bed can change a life. So, I
decided that I wanted to do something for my fellow teens – teens just
like me in so many ways but who find themselves living on the streets of
San Diego. I just couldn’t imagine being on the streets as a teen and my
Dad and I started Songs For Shelter to literally give a voice to what is
an invisible and heart breaking tragedy.

It’s estimated that over 2,000 teens may be homeless on the streets of
San Diego over the course of a year. To make it even worse, it often
spirals downward from there for many of these teens – kidnapped, killed,
rape, and human trafficking are all part of the risk for our fellow
teens.

We’ve now produced two concerts and raised nearly $17,000 for our
beneficiaries. Even though I’m away at college, Songs For Shelter
continues on under the leadership of Monse Lopez, a tremendous success
story and former resident of the Toussaint Academy. With more concerts
planned, including in other cities, as well as Notes Cafe, we are more
excited than ever about Songs For Shelter and the efforts to end teens
sleeping on streets. As always, your attendance and support matters!

Please consider lending a hand to our efforts. Attendance, sponsorship,
and volunteers are greatly appreciated! We’re going to do our part and
will put on another great Songs For Shelter concert, so please help us
in any way you can. Thank you!

With love…

The beneficiary chosen this year for their services in supporting homeless youth is Washington Elementary School Foundation, a school where 25% of the students are homeless. The team at Washington Elementary does an outstanding job providing its heart, hope, and help to homeless students.
